Given the rise of social and political polarization, rampant sensationalism and misinformation, a critical-thinking mind has become a highly sought out commodity. To this end, debate challenges preconceived notions by placing you on a side - an argumentative position - that you may not necessarily agree with personally. It allows one to free themselves from the fetters of a self-validating echo chamber instead, participate in civil discourse. Fundamentally, debate is analytical, critical and respectful.
Furthermore, It consolidates general knowledge and awareness of current affairs. Debate intermixes the discussion of fundamental 'paradigms' and perspectives with contemporary issues, thus remaining ever-relevant. It emphasizes research skills, yet also - to succeed - one must have a strong passion for learning and argumentation. Yet, all of this information has to be articulated in a succinct, yet effective manner, cultivating face-to-face communicative abilities.
Debate itself is a fundamental skill - let us revivify an age-old tradition to its former glory, promoting it not only as an extracurricular, but as a tool for education. It is an activity needed in our divisive world.
