“The humanities are dead”.
This emphatic utterance reverberates; its intensity is increasing in an exponential manner, especially with the dawn of new developments in the age of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). In Hong Kong - a centre of finance, commerce and entrepreneurship - this ‘death’ has never been more apparent. To many, it is one that is welcome.
It is thus ever-important that for students wishing to pursue disciplines such as the humanities and social sciences, opportunities should be easy to access. Indeed, even for those pursuing non-humanities degrees, students should be able to unmitigatedly explore their independent passions - perhaps building transferable skills along the way.
Most fortunately, Sha Tin College continues to offer an abundance of opportunities to develop skills relevant to the humanities and social sciences, be it through the MYP, IB programme or through the myriad of extracurricular opportunities offered. Through the formation of a “Humanities and Social Sciences Council”, I seek to further fortify the standing of these disciplines within Sha Tin College, providing even more opportunities for engagement; both cultivating independent passion and fostering appreciation for those unengaged.
Our flagship newsletter, The Paradigm, creates a centralized platform to promote student groups and creates an avenue for discourse. The newsletter features a club catalog, an 'individual achievements' section, and feature photos from around the campus.
The HSSC was formed to strengthen the standing of the humanities and the social sciences at STC. To this end, Edition II of the Paradigm very much encapsulates our driving ethos: to provide a platform for student voice for representation and social engagement - all to cultivate independent passion in areas where platforms may not exist for high school students. This edition features the work of a diverse range of contributors from across year groups, including guest contributions from South Island School. The ideas explored in The Paradigm maintain contemporary relevance, ranging from addressing the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus to rampant misogyny in the Middle East.
The Humanities and Social Sciences Council (HSSC) launched the ‘Word of the Day’ widget in hopes of achieving the following aims:
